Your role

The Environmental & Social Officer will be responsible for, and should be able to:

  • Appraise the environmental, social and human rights impacts and risks (including reputational) of FMO investments, against the requirements of FMO Sustainability Policy, which builds primarily on the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability (IFC PS) and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and agree on corrective actions.
  • Assure E&S and Human Rights (HuRi) risks remain within FMO’s Policies and Risk Appetite
  • Advise on monthly E&S reviews as part of the annual Client Credit Reviews as required for all relevant investments. Furthermore, prepare and/or contribute to Change Requests and other updates.
  • Contribute to the development of FMO policies and guidelines related to E&S topics.
  • Maintain, update, and help to develop credit management systems, guidelines and tools relating to environmental, social, corporate governance and human rights matters.
  • Collaborate with and as needed provide support to the wider CSO department to create a proper and well-balanced E&S risk awareness environment.

Your team

The Credit & and Special Operations Department (CSO) has a central and pivotal role in the Investment Process within FMO. It gets involved in all transactions, from CIP stage to exit. The different teams combine a supportive and decision-making role, following the “Protect and Enable” motto.

The Credit Team (Credit) consists of 20 professionals and covers the following tasks:

  • Advising FMO’s IC and FRC on investment proposals and client reviews, based on an in-depth and holistic risk analysis.
  • Assessing the risk profile of (potential) borrowers and investees using relevant financial statements, financial models, corporate & project documents as well as market information. The assessment focusses on borrower/investee’s financial standing and consequently on FMO’s risks involved.
  • Review the performance of existing exposures and, if needed, working with Investment staff on appropriate follow-up actions and regulatory classifications.
  • Analyzing and advising on environmental risk, social risk, impact and additionality of proposed and existing investments.
  • Analyzing and reporting on portfolio trends and regulatory classifications.
  • Staying informed about the market risks and client performance by, for example, incidental travels.

Your background

We are particularly interested in candidates with a track record in:

  • Execution of Environmental, Social and/or Human Rights appraisal and analysis of private sector E&S performance in emerging markets.
  • Working experience with E&S impacts and mitigates across a range of sectors, with a preference for experiences in Energy, Agriculture Food& Water and Financial Institutions.
  • Development of credible remedial E&S actions and advising on adherence to international best practice.

The 'must haves' for this role are:

  • MA or MSc degree in an environmental science or social/economic science and/or in business and human rights.
  • Applied knowledge of and experience with the IFC PS or comparable international environmental, social, and/or human rights standards.
  • A strong track record in working with private sector companies in emerging markets, to identify environmental, social and/or human rights impacts and developing mitigation measures in line with international industry practice.

The ideal candidate demonstrates the following skills:

  • Team players mentality with ability to work in small dedicated and result oriented teams.
  • Strong analytical skills; risk awareness, while thinking creatively with an entrepreneurial focus.
  • Strong skills in planning, organizing, and prioritizing when working on several assignments at the same time/ under pressure.
  • Fluency in English required (written and spoken)
  • Team player
